How Solar Panels Connect to the National Grid

A home solar system does not work in isolation — it works hand in hand with the national grid, drawing from it when you need more than you generate and feeding into it when you generate more than you use. Understanding this two-way relationship explains how you are billed, how you are paid, and why a few formalities are involved at installation.

A two-way relationship
Most domestic solar systems are "grid-tied", meaning they are connected to the mains supply rather than running independently. This brings real advantages. When your panels produce more than your home is using, the surplus flows out to the grid and earns you a Smart Export Guarantee payment. When your panels produce less than you need — in the evening, overnight, or on a dull day — you simply draw the balance from the grid as normal. Import, export and your meter
Your smart meter sits at the heart of this, measuring both the electricity you import from the grid and the surplus you export to it. You are billed for what you import at your supplier's rate, and paid for what you export under your SEG tariff. The DNO notification
Connecting solar to the grid involves your local Distribution Network Operator (DNO) — the company that runs the electricity network in your area (distinct from your supplier). For most domestic systems, the installer simply notifies the DNO after installation under the standard process. For larger systems, or where a battery is added, permission may be required before the work is done. Export limits
In some cases the DNO may apply an export limit — capping how much power your system can push back to the grid at any moment — to protect the local network. This is more likely with larger systems or in areas where the network is already heavily used. An export limit does not stop your panels generating or you using your own power; it only restricts the rate of export, and for most typical domestic systems it has little practical effect. Your installer will advise if any limit applies to your installation.
What happens when the grid goes down
Because grid-tied systems work with the network, they are designed to shut down automatically during a power cut, as a safety feature called anti-islanding. This prevents your panels feeding electricity into a "dead" network while engineers may be working on the lines. Could you go off-grid entirely?
In principle yes, but for most UK homes it is neither practical nor cost-effective. Going fully off-grid would require a much larger battery bank to cover dark winter weeks, plus careful management, at considerable expense — all to replicate something the grid provides cheaply and reliably. For the vast majority of households, a grid-tied system (optionally with a battery for evening use and backup) gives the best of both worlds: your own clean generation plus the security and simplicity of the grid behind it.
