Solar Accreditations Explained

Solar quotes are covered in logos and acronyms, and it is not always clear which ones matter. This page explains the main UK accreditations in plain English so you know what each badge actually guarantees — and which one you cannot do without.

MCS — the one that matters most

The Microgeneration Certification Scheme is the cornerstone accreditation for domestic solar. It sets standards for both the equipment and the installer, and an MCS-certified installation is a legal requirement to claim payments under the Smart Export Guarantee. In other words, without MCS you cannot be paid for the electricity you export. When you complete an installation, you receive an MCS certificate, which you keep and use to register with your chosen export supplier. If a company is not MCS-certified, do not proceed.

RECC — Renewable Energy Consumer Code

RECC is a consumer protection code backed by the Chartered Trading Standards Institute. Members agree to fair sales practices, clear contracts, accurate performance estimates and a complaints procedure. RECC also provides deposit and workmanship protection, giving you somewhere to turn if the installer fails to deliver. Most reputable MCS installers are RECC members.

HIES — Home Insulation and Energy Systems

HIES is an alternative consumer code offering similar protections to RECC, including insurance-backed guarantees, deposit protection and workmanship warranties. An installer will typically belong to either RECC or HIES rather than both. Either is a good sign; the key point is that some recognised consumer code sits behind the company.

TrustMark

TrustMark is a government-endorsed quality scheme covering tradespeople across many sectors, including renewables. A TrustMark registration indicates the business has been vetted for technical competence, customer service and trading practices. It is a useful additional signal of a reputable firm, though for solar specifically MCS remains the essential one.

NICEIC and electrical competence

Because solar involves electrical work, the people carrying it out should be properly qualified electricians. NICEIC (and similar bodies such as NAPIT) register competent electrical contractors. You want the electrical side of your installation handled by suitably qualified people, and reputable solar firms will be able to confirm this.

Manufacturer and product warranties

Separate from installer accreditations are the warranties on the products themselves. Quality panels carry both a product warranty and a performance warranty (guaranteeing a minimum output, often around 85–90%, after 25 years). Inverters and batteries carry their own warranties. These are not accreditations as such, but they are part of judging a quote: cheap components with short warranties are a false economy.

How to verify a badge is genuine

Logos can be copied, so do not take them at face value. You can check an installer's MCS certification on the official MCS website, and consumer-code membership on the RECC or HIES registers. A legitimate company will gladly give you its MCS certificate number. Taking five minutes to verify is one of the simplest ways to protect a five-figure investment.

Why the badges exist at all

It helps to understand why this web of accreditations developed. As solar grew popular, so did a minority of poor installers and aggressive sales operations. The schemes above were created to protect consumers making a significant, long-lived purchase: MCS to assure technical quality and unlock export payments, and the consumer codes to govern fair selling, honest performance estimates and proper redress. When you choose an accredited installer, you are not just ticking a box — you are buying into a framework designed to catch problems before they reach you and to give you somewhere to turn if they do.

Accreditations and your warranty claims

Accreditations also matter years after installation. Insurance-backed guarantees offered through RECC or HIES can step in if the installer ceases trading, covering workmanship issues that the original company can no longer address. This is precisely the scenario homeowners fear most, and it is where an unaccredited "cheap" installer can prove very expensive. Keep every certificate, warranty document and the handover pack together in a safe place; you may need them to make a claim or when you eventually sell the property.

What accreditations do not tell you

Finally, a note of realism: accreditations set a floor, not a ceiling. They confirm a company meets recognised standards, but they cannot guarantee the friendliest service or the keenest price. Use them as an essential filter — rule out anyone without MCS — and then judge the shortlisted, accredited firms on their design, pricing, references and aftercare. Accreditation gets a company onto your list; the rest of your due diligence decides who does the work.

To put all of this into practice, adopt a short routine for any installer you consider. Note their MCS certificate number and check it on the official register; confirm their consumer-code membership with RECC or HIES; ask which electrical qualification covers the work; and request the product and performance warranties in writing. If anything cannot be verified, treat that as your answer and move on to a company that welcomes the scrutiny.

It is also worth remembering that accreditation bodies update their standards over time as technology and best practice evolve, so a current certification reflects today's requirements rather than those of years ago. When you verify an installer, you are confirming they meet the latest expectations for safety, performance estimates and consumer fairness — a meaningful reassurance for a system you expect to run for a quarter of a century.
